Match Report - Shelford 4th v Poblenou Enginyers
|
The early
hours of Saturday morning saw the Shelford IV team set
off to Barcelona for their inaugural European League
fixture, against the Enginyers of Poblenou.
|
With most of the team flying
from Luton, the atmosphere was
building as we made the final
mini-bus pick up from Shelford
Rugby Club car park at 2.45am.
The atmosphere on the bus also
revealed that one or two of the
squad had not had much sleep and
there was a cloud of fumes
hanging over Joey Cullen, which
was a bad portent for what was
to follow later in the
afternoon.
And so, Luton airport, not the
finest of places to spend two
hours and with little else to
occupy us we hit the bar. Joey
Cullen enjoyed his “breakfast” -
which was definitely missing
some of the important
nutritional food groups expected
of an international athlete.
Luckily for the team, Chef de
Mission, Mike Whibley had
travelled as an advance party to
check out the facilities and
reported back to us that the
Poblenou pitch was under water
after 3 days of heavy rainfall.
The fixture was moved to the
Olympic Rugby Stadium at Valle
D’Hebron, an artificial pitch…..
and the kick off pushed back to
7.30pm! All hope of getting the
team to the stadium in a fit
state was lost. The lads threw
their bags into the hotel rooms
and so began a crazy afternoon,
led by team trouble-maker Simon
Kidney, and much to the waiter’s
delight; round after round began
to arrive, with only some salted
green chillies and a few plates
of Pata Negra Iberico ham to
soak everything up
By the agreed RDV time of 5pm,
Joey, having received the
dubious guidance of Tom Arnold
all afternoon, had lost
consciousness and could not be
roused. We put him in the
recovery position and headed
down the Rambla to the Metro
with the KO approaching.
It began to rain heavily as we
somehow found the sports ground.
Once changed, Larry Bennett
required a lie down and found
some tackle pads to sleep on.
Duncan Stafford withdrew on
medical advice and the rest of
us began warming up and tried to
make it look like we at least
knew how to catch.
The match, in brief:
Poblenou were sober to a man and
had quite a handy inside centre
from Bolivia. Their back row
were fast and they made it
difficult for us. However, the
pre match psych-up paid
dividends as we scored first,
through Charlie Pettit breaking
through the middle and side
stepping the Poblenou full back.
Conversion was missed as the
kicking T went missing, and Olly
Green found that it was
impossible to create a kicking
divot in astro-turf. From the
restart, Poblenou applied
sustained pressure, finally
breaking our line to level the
score at 5-5. Shelford then had
to put up a backs to the wall
defensive performance before we
broke up field nearing half time
and, against 4th team
regulations, decided to have a
penalty kick for goal – Olly
Green (having found the missing
kicking T) slotted it perfectly
and we made it to half time in
front 8-5 on the scoreboard, but
behind 15-14 on the player
count, after Tom Arnold decided
he’d been on the pitch far too
long and was shown a yellow card
for smelling too strongly of
alcohol every time he shouted at
the referee… which was quite
often.
Into the second half and a raft
of changes from Shelford. Pretty
soon the casualties started to
mount as first Dan Rodgers was
knocked out cold, putting in a
huge head first tackle. Then Tom
Truelove got a nasty bang to the
head which would later see him
stumbling around Barcelona in
the early hours, unsure of where
his hotel was, or his passport;
concussion for sure. As Shelford
defended bravely, Larry Bennett
was also forced to retire from
the action after a short 2
minute cameo. We were running
out of seats for the injured
players. However, the league win
was secured as first Olly Green
with a nerveless penalty, then
Gareth Ash muscling over the
line with 3 Poblenou players
hanging off him (converted by
man of the match Green) took the
final score to Poblenou
Enginyers 5 – 18 Shelford IV.

Huge
thanks
to our
hosts
for
putting
on
tremendous
post
match
hospitality.
The
Poblenou
captain
wore a
new
Shelford
shirt
all
night.
It was
presented
to him
as
Poblenou
man of
the
match.
Club
shields
were
exchanged
and
Poblenou
made
their
award to
Olly
Green
for
Shelford
man of
the
match.
Both
teams
left the
Poblenou
clubhouse
at 11.30
and
there
followed
riotous
games in
the 1
euro a
drink
bar.
Shelford
players
found it
difficult
to play
games in
Spanish
(or was
it
Catalan)
and had
to drink
countless
glasses
of uncut
rum as
forfeits.
Survivors
then
moved
onto a
Ramblas
bar and
it is
reputed
that the
last
Shelford
players
made it
back to
their
hotel at
5am. The
entire
squad
was
present
outside
the
hotel at
8am to
catch a
bus to
the
airport,
including
poor
Joey who
had
slept
for 15
hours!
Well
done to
the
Shelford
guys who
lasted
the
night
and
thanks
to
George
for his
organisation.
Thanks
so much
to
Poblenou,
especially
to Roger
and
Gabri.
We would
recommend
the
visit to
all the
other GK
clubs.
We look
forward
to
welcoming
them
back to
Shelford
in
February.
Thanks
to all
the
squad
for
making
it such
a good
trip and
for
playing
so well
in
adversity.

Dear All,
It was
agreed at the AGM by all present that we would be implementing the rules on
result reporting very strictly next season. So please read through the rules and
notes for clubs on the web site so that you fully understand them.
You have been
warned...
Could results
be reported in the following format.....
- Put all result
information in the subject line of the e-mail. Unless of course there is a
question or query, this can be written into the body of the e-mail.
- Start the
subject Line with "Greene King Rugby"
- Follow this with
the "The Merit table or Cup competition of the result being reported"
- Then add the
date of the match
- And finally the
result. Please use both team names and levels. Please include whether the result
is from a catch up match if so please provide the date the match was originally
scheduled to be played on.
For Example
Greene king Rugby - Super Prem Merit Table - 15/11 - Chingford 2 - 0 Vs Datchworth 2 - 0

This site is provided for the Rugby Clubs, Teams and Players involved with the
Greene King Country Clubs Merit
Table and Cup Competition.
The Greene King Country Rugby Clubs Competition
This started as a small merit table competition in 1997.
Several local clubs were concerned that their lower XV games were being
called off more often, frequently at the last minute.
Players were becoming frustrated and losing interest. Some were leaving
or finding other ways of spending Saturday afternoons!
There was also an unfortunate knock-on effect on Saturday bar takings!
In the first season two tables
were set up (at 4th and 5th team playing level for the
larger clubs), named Premiere and Deuxieme, and the success of this idea was
soon proved. A Super Premiere
(3rd XV) level was added later and, as other clubs and teams joined,
the original Premiere and Deuxieme tables were split into two parts (Nord and
Sud) geographically. Last season
(2005-06) a third Deuxieme table was created (Centrale) to cater for the
increased number of teams wishing to join this level of competition. There are now
Six tables and the whole competition has full RFU recognition.
Greene King first agreed to sponsor the competition, under the name
of the “Greene King Country” Rugby Clubs Competition, in the 1999-2000
season. We are very pleased that
they have continued this sponsorship each season since then.
In
2000 the competition was extended to run with a full suggested home and away
fixture list for each table.
There are two trophies for each table – one for the team winning the
table with the highest number of points and a second for the team finishing in
the runners up spot.
In the same season a Deuxieme Knock out Cup competition was introduced – with all first round games
being Nord v Sud - plus a Plate competition for first round losers.
A Super Premiere Cup was started 2001-2002, and a Premiere Cup and Plate
(together with a Super Premier Plate) has run from 2002-03 and last season teams
from the Centrale table were integrated into the first round Deuxieme
draw........
